Public Art Project - Summer 2021
During Fairfield Union's 2021 Summer Enrichment Program, students in Ms. McKinnon's art/sculpture class created two sculptures using metal and one using clay. Students learned about weight distribution and meaningful public art as well as crossing the curriculum when they learned about the science of clay. Mathematics come into play when students graph their metal design to 1/4 scale to send to the metal cutter.
Below is their first metal sculpture which is on display outside the Fairfield County Visitors & Convention Bureau located at 158 W. Wheeling Street, Lancaster. Titled "World is in our Hands" with the theme
“Every interaction you have is an opportunity to make a positive impact on our World”
was created in conjunction with Ric Leichliter and student artists Abriara Hotrum, Tyler Teal and Kamryn Wilson.
Titled "The Space Between Us", student artists Addison Lieser and Lauren Denny worked with metal to create their sculpture. Addison and Lauren developed their design using cardboard to create their model at 1/4th in scale. Using this method gives the artists a visual representation while working with pieces at a manageable scale. Working through the design elements that may need to be adapted is part of the important critical thinking that is a valuable lifelong learning skill. The theme for their sculpture is "Our connections grow stronger as we continue to blossom."
The third and final sculpture is titled "Faces in our Community". Students used clay as the medium for this project where they learned the process of extracting clay from the earth. Art activities, such as sculpture, helps students gain the tools necessary for understanding human experience, adapting to and respecting others' ways of working and thinking, developing creative problem-solving skills, and communicating thoughts and ideas in a variety of ways.
Student artists for this project were Stephani Brown, Abriara Hotrum, Addison Lieser, Riley Peters, Indianna Rader, Tyler Teal, Natasha Thomas, Kamryn Wilson, Alexis Wright, Afton Horn and Elly Horn. The theme for this project was "We are all unique and beautiful individually; as a community united we can make a meaningful impact."
The students would like to thank sculptor, Ric Leichliter, for taking time to share his talents during this process.
